Endowment Mortgage Policies – What Went Wrong

What, first of all, is an endowment mortgage? To start, the name isn’t actually regarded as official, or technical within the securities industry. However, it suits us quite well because this is what most people know them by. A regular mortgage, coupled with an insurance policy, is what the endowment mortgage term refers to. It consists of an interest-only mortgage and term insurance policy, where the borrower would purchase the endowment policy, paying only the premiums, and the policy itself would be responsible for the mortgage upon maturity. Now, since an endowment policy is intimately tied to the stock market, this principal amount would (presumably and hopefully!) grow at a rate greater than the bank rate of interest, ultimately leaving the borrower with more than enough money to cover the mortgage.
